Our Story
The finding common ground Initiative began in Northeast Washington out of frustration with our increasingly divided and polarized world. Of all the actions we considered, one question kept coming up: how do we talk to our neighbors and even our estranged family members again? We all seem to want the same things and yet we act like we don't live in the same world.
We realized that the only action that made sense was to start talking—across differences, with respect and curiosity. Instead of giving up, we chose a different path: small, honest conversations focused on shared local priorities and the things that matter most to our communities.
Those early conversations grew into a nonpartisan, community-led initiative dedicated to listening, rebuilding trust, and strengthening civic and communication skills—one conversation at a time.
Our Purpose: To equip citizens with the skills to bridge divides and strengthen communities in a polarized world.
We focus on civic engagement and practical communication skills. Our small Living Room Groups give neighbors simple tools to talk through hard issues even when they disagree.
Our work revolves around building networks and action, helping towns connect people and host events focused on the issues that affect everyone. Topics like healthcare, farming, housing, and economic vitality aren't political; they're essential to a thriving community. We support local citizens to host these crucial conversations, build skills and find solutions together.
Our Goals in 2026:
1. For people in Eastern WA to be aware of the idea of finding common ground.
2. To build an active network of Eastern WA communities.
3. To train anyone in Eastern WA who's interested in building skills to dialogue with those whom we disagree.
